OUR BEACHES

The municipality of Navia has approximately twelve kilometres of coastline. While the coastal line is small, it has six important beaches, as well as some small coves, of great ecological and tourist interest. In total, they account for nearly 1´5 Km. Almost all of the naviega coast, predominate in the cliffs, generally of average height. Navia beaches are sandy, fairly coarse-grained, by entering its composition the predominant slate.

Beach of Frejulfe:

Declared Natural Monument, is the largest in the municipality, that it reaches 750 metres in length. You have a double access: from the road of Andés, in the high part of the town of Frejulfe the people or, from Puerto de Vega, in the alto de Soirana. Both accesses are well signposted.

 Description:

It's an open beach, little coat yorientada to the North, which makes it dangerous for bathing.

Adhered to the eastern margin of the arenal runs the small stream of Piñera or Frexulfe, whose mouth is partially obstructed by a sand bar that remansa inland rivers, giving rise to a ponding of water brackish environment to which develop subhalófilas, poorly developed but very valuable marshes by species that harbor. Among these are grassland of low size and coverage of salty jonquil (Eleocharis parvula), species listed as endangered and known only in this town along the Cantabrian coast. Other towns cited in Laredo and Villaviciosa appear to have become extinct. Populations of Frexulfe occupy subject to successive periods of desiccation very shallow ponds.

Another species protected by the subhalófila marsh of Frexulfe is fine litter (Ruppia maritima), catalogued as vulnerable and resident species of ponds of some depth. Finally, it should be noted the interest of the reedbeds of Scirpus pungens, amphibious species not protected but that, in addition to in Frexulfe, can only be seen in the marshes of the river Eo. Almost all of the beach of Frexulfe from Piñera stream to the West end at the tip of the peak, is occupied by a narrow cord dune populated of the characteristic flora of the white sand dunes, among which dominates a large and strong rhizomes: the barrón (Ammophila arenaria SSP. australis).

For their rarity are also the spurge of the beaches (Euphorbia peplis) and the cottony (Otanthus maritimus). The first is listed as sensitive to the alteration of its Habitat and only appears, in addition to in Frexulfe, on the beaches of Barayo (Navia-Valdés) and the berries Playón (Soto of the boat-Castrillón). The second is cataloged as vulnerable and its presence is limited to the beaches of Sarrello (Tapia de Casariego), Navia and Verdicio (Gozón). After this first cord, were once small grey dune areas currently desdibujadas by pine plantations that support an intense summer use. At the western end of the beach is preserved a remarkable interest geormofológico element: a Valley hung on the cliff whose abnormal gap is due to the rise of the continental shelf following the establishment of the primitive fluvial network.

In terms of fauna, must highlight the importance of the cliffs and islets to the beach for some protected seabirds nesting: oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) and shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis).

Location and access:

The beach of Frexulfe is situated on the eastern coast of the municipality of Navia, between the municipal capital (Navia) and the town of Puerto de Vega.

The easiest beach access is performed from the small village of Frexulfe, a scattered hamlet of less than forty neighbors of which part a small road that, in little more than 500 m, leads directly to the beach. To reach Frexulfe, simply follow the national 634 to Navia and there take the Local road NV - 2. This way part of Navia and runs along the coastline, reaching the towns of Frexulfe, Soirana and the interesting fishing village of Puerto de Vega, from where returns to bind with the N-634, at the height of Villapedre.

Access from Soirana, where part of a carreterilla who ends up on top of the cliff, in a splendid natural viewpoint to almost 30 m high on the beach and with appropriate parking place is much more attractive. From the descent to the beach can be a comfortable and equipped with handrails pedestrian path.
